Seasonal Care

Lawn Care Calendar

January

Keep off the grass if it is frozen or waterlogged.  Remove any heavy dews to prevent disease problems.

February

Spike the lawn to aerate and stimulate soil organisms and root growth.

March

When ground conditions are suitable, cut the grass with the blade set high so that just the tip of the grass is trimmed.

April

Mow when required, dig out coarse patches of grass or weeds and re-seed bare patches, use weed/feed if required.

May

Mow when required, treat with selective weed killers or weed/feed if not used in April.

June

Rake before mowing to keep clover under control, water lawn if necessary.

July

Treat with fertiliser or weed/feed.  Rake and water when necessary.  If weather is particularly dry and hot, remove collecting bag from mower when mowing to cover lawn in grass clippings to help retain moisture.

August

Mow and water when necessary.  Fill in any cracks caused by drought with a mixture of sharp sand and soil.

September

Raise the height of the cut to allow the grass to thicken to protect the roots from frost or snow.

October

Rake out the moss and wispy grass.  Spike the lawn to assist drainage and brush in peat and sharp sand into the holes.

November

Rake away leaves and disperse worm casts before mowing.  Get your mower serviced ready for spring.

December

Rake away leaves, keep off the lawn if frozen or waterlogged.

Hedges

Before working on hedges, make sure there are no birds nesting.  To damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is being used or built is an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.

Deciduous Hedges

Formative pruning should be carried out in the winter for the first few years after planting.

Maintenance pruning should be carried out each summer.

Evergreen Hedges

Formative pruning should be carried out in the spring for the first few years after planting.

Maintenance pruning should be carried out each summer.  Do not trim conifers after August as this could encourage bare patches to form.
